"Positron emission tomography (PET) and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) are ultra-sensitive analytical techniques that have been used in human microdose studies. A microdose (or human Phase 0) study is performed at a very early stage of drug development in order to obtain preliminary data on a drug candidate in humans prior to commencement of Phase I clinical trials."
"It is now possible to combine a single clinical study so that PET imaging can be obtained along with pharmacokinetic data, thus maximising the data output from a single trial. Such an approach has the potential to be a far more cost-effective design than conducting these types of studies in individual groups of subjects."
